When you play zone defense, you are assigned to a designated area of the court, or zone, rather than to an individual opponent. Your zone position changes with each move of the ball. Zone may be adjusted from sagging inside to pressuring outside shots, overplaying passing lanes, and trapping the ball. Zone defenses are named according to the alignment of players from the top toward the basket. 1-2-2 zone defense plays a trapping ball handler strategy forcing deflections and turnovers.
